I went to see Monsters Vs. Aliens recently, and to my surprise I was really entertained by the movie and its characters. It is a thoroughly enjoyable animated 3-D film from Dreamworks that has lot going for it: Top-notch animation, a stellar voice-over cast and a very entertaining and engrossing story in which monsters (all of them cleverly based on 1950's B-movie creatures and characters) fight for the Earth as good guys against an attacking wave of alien robots.

The story begins on the day Modesto native Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is to be married to local TV weatherman Derek Dietl (voiced by Paul Rudd). As she stands outside the church, waiting for the ceremony to begin, a meteorite suddenly falls from the sky and lands directly on top of her. She isn't killed, but the strange radiation from the meteorite transforms her into a giant; it isn't long before she's tranquilized by government agents and taken away. When she awakens, she learns that she's being held in a secret high tech facility designed to keep monsters out of the public eye. She then meets four of the residents. The first, nicknamed B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen), is a viscous blue blob with one eye and no brain, the result of a genetic accident involving a tomato and a packet of ranch dressing. The second, Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. (voiced by Hugh Laurie) was once a man until a machine fused his DNA with that of an insect; now he's a child-sized bug who likes to laugh like an evil scientist.
monsters vs aliens, movie, film, cover, animated
The third, The Missing Link (voiced by Will Arnett), is a fish-human hybrid who isn't the most physically able but likes to pretend that he is. The fourth is Insectosaurus, a monstrous caterpillar that once attacked Tokyo. The facility they're in is run by the aptly named W.R. Monger (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland), a tough-talking general whose Southern accent is second only to his loud voice. Because of her enormous size, he gives Susan the nickname Ginormica.

When a tentacled alien creature named Gallaxhar (voiced by Rainn Wilson) sends a giant robot probe to Earth on a mission of destruction, Monger convinces the President (voiced by Stephen Colbert) to let the monsters take care of the problem. At this point, it becomes a journey of self-discovery for Susan--she essentially begins realizing that she's actually achieved something by being transformed into a monster, and because of that, she starts to rethink her relationship with Derek. It's not as if he was all that nice a guy to begin with.

Overall, monsters vs. Aliens is a surprisingly pleasant, kid-safe movie that adults will also like. No bad language, no sex, no real violence. Just humor, fun, and good messages. Perfect for a family night outing.

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is one of the really good animated movies that uniquely appeals to both 7 and 40 years olds. Everything about the original "Ice Age and Ice Age: The Meltdown" were well established, especially the fun, quirky characters of Sid the Sloth (John Leguizamo), Manny the Mammoth (Ray Romano), and Diego the Saber Tooth Tiger (Denis Leary). And let's not forget Scrat, the squirrel on a demonically obsessive mission for an acorn, they all return for this third and final installment.

Manny and Ellie are about to have a baby, the friendship between Manny, Sid, and Diego seems threatened. Diego gets the hint and is ready to take off on his own again, when he realizes he may be too old to go out alone. For Sid, he too, wants a family and as fate would have it, he comes across what looks to be three gigantic, abandoned eggs that when hatched become baby T Rex's. Of course, mama T Rex comes a calling and it’s not long before ole Sid is in big trouble and it’s up to his buddies to bale him out. ice age 3, dawn of the dinosaurs, movie, poster, film, coverSo Manny, Ellie, Diego, Crash and Eddie go on an adventure to save their troubled, good-for-nothing-of-a-friend sloth, Sid. They meet a friendly but weird acting weasel named Buck. Buck helps them try to find Sid before Manny and Ellie have babies.

Overall, the film was cute. There is enough laughs to carry it through and I just absolutely loved Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The animation is fantastic. The jokes are hilarious. Its one of those movies that both adults and children can enjoy. Completely great.

9 is a Sci-Fi action-packed adventure animated film based on Acker's Academy Award-nominated 2004 short film of the same name. Film Trailer:

9, poster, film, movie, focus features
The time is the too-near future. Powered and enabled by the invention known as the Great Machine, the world’s machines have turned on mankind and sparked social unrest, decimating the human population before being largely shut down.

But as our world fell to pieces, a mission began to salvage the legacy of civilization; a group of small creations was given the spark of life by a scientist in the final days of humanity, and they continue to exist post-apocalypse. Another of their own, #9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), emerges and displays leadership qualities that may help them survive and possibly even thrive. The conflicted but resilient tribe already includes #1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran and the group’s longtime leader; #2 (Martin Landau), a kindly but now-frail inventor; #3 and #4, scholarly twins who communicate nonverbally and mostly with each other; #5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart and nurturing engineer; #6 (Crispin Glover), an erratic artist beset by visions; #7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave and self-sufficient warrior; and #8 (Fred Tatasciore), the none-too-bright muscle and enforcer for #1.

With their group so few, these “stitchpunk” creations must summon individual strengths well beyond their own proportions in order to outwit and fight against still-functioning machines, one of which is a marauding mechanized beast. In the darkness just before the dawn, #9 rallies everyone of his number to band together.

While showcasing a stunning “steampunk”-styled visual brilliance, 9 dynamically explores the will to live, the power of community and how one soul can change the world.
