Winter's Bone is a drama film, an adaptation of the book “Winter's Bone” by Daniel Woodrell, set to be released on June 11, 2010 (limited). The film is written and directed by Debra Granik, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Lauren Sweetser, Shelley Waggener, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey, Isaiah Stone, Ashlee Thompson, William White, Casey MacLaren, Valerie Richards, Beth Domann, Tate Taylor, Cody Brown and Ronnie Hall.
The movie tells the story of Ree Dolly, a teenager girl living in the dirt poor areas of the Missouri Ozarks, right near Arkansas. This is one of the poorest areas of the country, and one of the most insular. It's almost like it's own little nation...full of bitterly feuding families who would nonetheless band together immediately if any outsiders came by. Their main source of income appears to be from cooking meth. Ree's father is supposed to appear in court in a few days or the family could lose its house and land...because dad put those up to make bail. Her dad has disappeared, and Ree sets out to find him and force his appearance.

We get to meet the people who help her and hinder her along the way. We see the strength of family bonds...even among family members who are barely on speaking terms and have nothing in common other than a name. We see how hard Ree works to take care of and educate her two young brothers. Their scenes together are touching, because Ree (a bright young lady) is determined that these boys learn something about getting along in the world so that they don't end up like every other male in the family. She's fighting an uphill battle, and it's bittersweet to observe.
